Read MoreI decided to compare Audio-Technica ATH-M40x vs Sennheiser HD 559 because both of them are wired and at first sight, they do not seem to have lots of differences. But actually, they do. Audio-Technica ATH-M40x is a closed back device, while Sennheiser HD 559 is an open back one. The headphones have an over-ear wearing style.
The most remarkable distinction is in their sensitivity, as Audio-Technica ATH-M40x has 98 dB, while Sennheiser HD 559 has 108 dB. The frequency response of the second device is a bit wider since it has a range of 14 Hz - 26 kHz, which is more than the Audio-Technica model has — 15 Hz - 24 kHz. The level of impedance is also pretty different. In the case with Audio-Technica ATH-M40x, it is 35 Ohm and Sennheiser HD 559 has 50 Ohm.
The sound signature of Audio-Technica ATH-M40x is quite accurate, almost flat. These headphones provide great dynamics and well-balanced sound with excellent detail.
Thanks to the open-back design, stereo imaging of Sennheiser HD 559 is spacious and natural. On tracks with intense sub-bass content, it delivers fantastic bass response.
The headphones made by Audio-Technica are not very heavy as their weight is 240 g. One of the reasons to choose this appliance is the fact that it can fold.
The height adjustments of both models of headphones can slide up and down smoothly into whatever position you would like. A detachable cable that is 300cm long comes with these devices. Unfortunately, the considered headphones do not have a microphone and built-in buttons. Another disadvantage is that you do not get a carry case. The supplied cable of Sennheiser HD 559 only has a 6.3mm straight plug, no adapter included.
